GRADING & TEAM PLACEMENT

At SPJ Netball Club, our focus is on helping every junior player enjoy netball, build confidence, and continue developing their skills. Grading plays an important role in ensuring players are placed at a level where they feel supported, challenged and part of a positive team environment.

We know how important this process is to families, and we truly appreciate the trust you place in the club. Our aim is always to achieve the best possible outcome for each player, while also balancing the needs of teams and the club as a whole.

There are a number of factors that influence team placement, including:

  • Player numbers within each age group

  • A range of skill levels and experience

  • Positional requirements

  • Age group structures

  • Coaching availability

  • Creating balanced and supportive teams

Because of these factors, it isn’t always possible to meet every individual preference. Please be assured that the committee gives careful consideration to every decision and approaches grading with care, fairness and the wellbeing of junior players at the forefront.

We encourage families to see grading as a positive learning opportunity for children, one that helps build resilience, understanding and teamwork, all of which are important both on and off the court.

How Team Placement Decisions Are Made

Grading day is an important part of the process, however it is not the only information used when forming junior teams.

To gain a well-rounded understanding of each player, the grading committee also considers:

  • Observations of players during previous seasons

  • Random observations of games and training throughout the year

  • Written and verbal feedback from coaches

  • Feedback from representative clubs, where applicable

Using multiple sources of information allows us to look beyond a single session and better understand each player’s development, strengths and needs over time.

This means that a player’s performance on grading day is considered as part of a broader picture, rather than in isolation.

Grading Day Information

  • Grading will take place on Court 3

  • Players will take part in short game scenarios

  • Players may spend different amounts of time on court

  • Players may be observed in a limited number of positions

This is a normal part of the grading process and helps graders assess a variety of player combinations within the available time.

Please don’t be concerned if your child:

  • Has fewer rotations than others

  • Plays only one position

  • Has time off court

These factors do not reflect final team placement.

On the day, parents should only bring something to the attention of the grading committee if:

  • A player has not been on court at all, and

  • The session is nearing its conclusion

  • If there is a safety concern

Parent & Spectator Guidelines

To help create a calm, supportive and positive grading environment for junior players, we ask that:

  • Parents and spectators watch from Court 1 or Court 2

  • Court 3 remains clear during grading

  • Siblings stay away from the court area

  • Coaching, calling out or giving instructions from the sidelines is avoided

Giving players space helps reduce nerves and allows graders to focus fully on observing each child in a relaxed environment.

Communication with the Club

If parents have information, concerns or messages they would like the club or committee to be aware of:

  • Please email the club before grading day

  • Please avoid approaching graders or committee members on the day

Grading day is a busy time requiring full attention on organisation and player observation. Receiving information in advance helps the club be well prepared and ensures the day runs smoothly for everyone.

What Players Should Bring

To help players feel comfortable and ready to participate, please ensure they:

  • Wear comfortable athletic clothing (club uniform is not required)

  • Wear runners suitable for netball

  • Bring a full drink bottle

  • Use the toilet before grading begins

Being prepared helps players enjoy the experience and perform at their best.

Frequently Asked Questions

What if my child is nervous on grading day?

This is very common, particularly for junior players. The grading committee is experienced in observing nervous players, and decisions are not based on one moment or one drill.

Grading day is considered alongside previous observations and coach feedback, so a child having an off day or feeling anxious will not disadvantage them.

What if my child doesn’t play their favourite position?

We understand that players often have preferred positions. While we try to consider this where possible, it isn’t always achievable during a short grading session. Team balance and overall structure must be considered first.

Why didn’t my child get as much court time as others?

Court time during grading varies for many reasons and does not directly reflect team placement. Players are rotated to allow graders to observe different combinations and skill sets.

Can I speak to someone on grading day about my child?

To ensure grading runs smoothly and remains fair for all players, discussions with graders or committee members are not held on grading day. If you have information the club should be aware of, please email the club prior to grading unless it is an emergency or is about the safety of your child.

A Final Word for Families

We understand that grading can be an emotional time for players and parents alike. While we may not always be able to meet every preference, please know that decisions are made thoughtfully, fairly and with the best interests of junior players and the wider club community in mind.

Thank you for your understanding, cooperation and ongoing support in helping us create a positive and welcoming environment for all junior players.

At SPJ Netball Club our objective is to provide equal access for all participants to enjoy developing their netball knowledge and skills, whilst fostering confidence, resilience and teamwork.
